Environmental Ethic
Choices. Actions. Impact. The world at our doorstep.
At Sweetgrass, we approach our role as environmental stewards humbled by the magnitude of the task but empowered by the choices we’re making. In everything we do, we’re working to protect the resources that sustain us – air, soil and water.
- The fibers we use – industrial hemp, organic cotton and fast-growing bamboo – are sustainably grown and nurture the land, rather than deplete it. All are grown without the use of toxic chemical herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.
- For production, we keep things close. Sweetgrass clothing is made with care in the United States, most within a day’s drive from our home base in southern Oregon.
- We use low impact fiber reactive dyes, which absorb directly into the fiber. They bond with the fabric on a molecular level, leaving little or no residue that can leach into water supplies (good on a global scale as well as in your washing machine).
- Online orders are shipped by the U.S. Postal Service in Cradle to CradleSM certified packaging. No plastic bags are involved. Each year, the USPS estimates this smart new shipping method prevents more than 15,000 metric tons of carbon equivalent emissions. Learn more here.
- As an offset to the use of non-renewable resources in our distribution channels, we invest in renewable energy production in the form of wind power. Here in southern Oregon, we participate in our regional Renewable Northwest Project.
Words like “eco-friendly” and “sustainable” are in common use these days. But know that for Sweetgrass, they’re more than the latest catch phrases. They are the foundations that have guided our choices and actions from the start. It’s our hope that Sweetgrass inspires other dreamers and doers in the fashion industry to embrace materials and means that have a smaller impact on the Earth.
